ABOUT
Stavanger Cathedral, dating from the 12th century, is Norway’s oldest preserved cathedral. To celebrate the cathedral’s 900th anniversary in 2025, it has undergone a total rehabilitation of the building, technical facilities and liturgical inventory. As part of this work, the cathedral has received a new lighting system, designed with respect for the historical architecture and with the aim of enhancing both the experience and daily use of the space. In 2018, work began on developing the lighting concept in close collaboration with the church and the client, and in 2024 after years of construction work, the doors again opened to the public.
LIGHT
The Cathedral’s new lighting system highlights the 900-year-old medieval architecture, while keeping the technical installation discreet and hidden from view. Through precise lighting, hidden fixtures and specially developed 100% reversible installation, the space has been made both functional and flexible, with a gentle illumination that’s not interfering with the listed, historical building. Emmanuel Vigeland’s historical chandeliers have been preserved and upgraded so that they appear as warm, glowing jewelry, giving the ambient lighting a visual motivation. The result is a timeless lighting system that preserves the church’s history and architecture, while meeting today’s needs for church services, concerts, ceremonies and visits.

Stavanger domkirke fra 1100-tallet er Norges eldste, bevarte domkirke. I forbindelse med kirkens 900-årsjubileum i 2025 har den gjennomgått en total rehabilitering av bygg, tekniske anlegg og liturgisk inventar. Som en del av dette arbeidet har kirken fått nytt belysningsanlegg, utarbeidet med respekt for den historiske arkitekturen og med mål om å styrke både opplevelsen og bruken av kirkerommet. I 2018 startet arbeidet med å utarbeide lyskonseptet i nært samarbeid med kirken og oppdragsgiver Stavanger kommune, og i 2024 åpnet dørene igjen for publikum.
LYS
Domkirken har fått ny belysning som løfter frem den 900 år gamle middelalderarkitekturen, samtidig som teknikken i størst mulig grad trer tilbake. Gjennom presis lyssetting, skjulte armaturer og spesialutviklede, 100 % reversible innfestinger er kirkerommet gjort både funksjonelt, fleksibelt og skånsomt belyst uten inngrep i den fredede bygningsmassen. Emmanuel Vigelands historiske lysekroner er bevart og oppgradert slik at de fremstår som varme, glødende smykker og gir funksjonslyset en naturlig visuell motivasjon. Resultatet er et tidløst lysanlegg som ivaretar kirkens historie og arkitektur, samtidig som det møter dagens behov for gudstjenester, konserter, seremonier og besøk.
