ABOUT: 

Gamle Aker Church, built in the 1100s, is the oldest standing building in Oslo and has recently reopened after extensive rehabilitation. As a Romanesque three-nave basilica made from local limestone, the church has undergone major upgrades, including a new lighting system, heating, ventilation, and flooring, all while preserving its historic essence. Zenisk worked closely with heritage authorities and the parish to balance the church’s historical significance with modern functionality, accommodating various activities such as concerts, services, and ceremonies. Special attention was given to lighting control, with programmed lighting scenes for different occasions, making the church adaptable for future use.

LIGHT: 

Zenisk’s lighting design enhances the church’s spatial character without introducing dramatic contrasts, instead mimicking the soft, diffused daylight that naturally fills the space. The lighting tracks are discreetly placed to maintain the architectural integrity, providing both functional and atmospheric light. The dark floors and furnishings are now lit with precision, making it easier to read hymn books, while vertical surfaces are illuminated to create a more open and airy feel. Special solutions, such as wireless LED lights in the historic chandeliers and ambient lighting in the Maria Chapel, highlight both aesthetics and functionality, perfectly suited for large occasions like weddings and baptisms.
